Subject: How to Succeed with Adult ADD/ADHD Instead of Killing Yourself Trying

Dear Friend,

You've probably suspected this…

An ADD/ADHD life is no ordinary life.

It can be a life of great success because of the passionate and creative vision that comes easily to ADD/ADHD brains (if you know how to turn it on.)

Or…

An ADD/ADHD (I'll just call it ADHD from here on out, OK?) life can be full of struggles.

The Reason This
Website Came To Be...

As a Psychiatrist, and an Expert in ADHD, I regularly teach other doctors and health professionals about Adult ADHD.

Most Doctors just don't know enough about Adult ADHD - so this education is critical for them...

In general, most doctors are eager to learn how to assess and treat Adult ADHD, and the lessons are well received.

One cold night...

I was giving a talk to some Adult Psychiatrists - who worked in a community general hospital. These were doctors who worked with some very unwell patients - with hard to treat Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. They prided themselves on treating the hardest to treat patients.

These doctors were not taking Adult ADHD very seriously.

When I confronted them about their approach this said that compared to other psychiatric disorders, Adult ADHD was like 'cosmetic psychiatry'.

"Pardon me?" I asked..

"Cosmetic Psychiatry - you know, you may be a little better, but it's not essential."

When I Saw This Level of
Ignorance In Other Doctors...

I got fired up.

I know how hard it can be for adults with ADHD - particularly when there are inadequate supports to assess and treat adult ADHD.

I gave those doctors so much data and information - that I made believers out of them.

They will never call Adult ADHD 'Cosmetic Psychiatry' again.

Witnessing this level of stigma and discrimination about Adult ADHD from other health professionals made me think of how I could help you - an adult who needs back up and support - even if your own doctors aren't there to help...

To Ensure This
Won't Ever Happen Again

I'm a big believer in leveraging the power of technology - i.e. the internet - to get the right information to the people who need it - FAST.

So, I contacted my friend and colleague Dr. Russell Barkley - and we've partnered to give you the tools you need to turn your life around.

You'll learn so much - that you can even start to educate your doctor - if he or she doesn't know enough about Adult ADHD.

Now, to be clear - I am describing a real story about psychiatrists who just didn't have the facts about Adult ADHD. These doctors are in their profession because they are committed to help people with their mental health. The problem is - that the medical schools and residency programs are just starting to teach the students about Adult ADHD. So, if your doctor graduated before 2005 - there is a big chance that he or she doesn't know a lot about Adult ADHD - unless they are a specialist in the area.

Let me explain…

It's Not Your Fault
You're So Misunderstood

It's not easy having ADHD.

You may not even notice the following things, but…

How many of these work or home-life situations apply to you? (Be honest.)

Note: If you suspect ADHD affects someone close to you, pretend you are that person… you might learn something about them.

Did you ever wonder why people get upset when you…

  • don't pay attention to what they're saying?
  • never finish anything unless it's a matter of life or death [(or at least a deadline)]?
  • have so many open-ended projects "in progress?"
  • think a discussion has ended and change the subject, or worse, walk away, before [the person you're talking to has] finished with the subject?
  • look around at other things while talking? (doesn't apply to everyone)
  • talk at length about things you're excited about [and not noticed that the other person wants to change the subject?]
  • fidget so much? (doesn't apply to everyone)

In short, when you're marching to the beat of a different drummer, it's easy to be misunderstood. And, because the world is full of people who DON'T have ADHD, you end up feeling misunderstood a lot …a whole lot.

Does it sometimes seem as if everyone you meet is a difficult person? (Could it be that they're having difficulty understanding where you're coming from?)

How about if you're trying to have a fulfilling, intimate relationship with another person, and it's just not coming together as you'd like it to?

It's common for people with ADHD to have difficult interactions with others. But it doesn't have to be this way. More about this later…

Is This the Wild and
Wacky World You Live In?

Let's get really brutally honest and dig a bit deeper.

How many of the following have you noticed in your life?

Note: Again, if you suspect ADHD affects someone close to you, pretend you are them… you might learn something about how they see the world.

  • You find your mind wandering and you have to fake that you heard everything someone said.
  • You find yourself reading the same thing over and over again, trying to pound the words into your head.
  • Sometimes you find yourself busy all day, but by bedtime, it seems like nothing much got done.
  • Not planning ahead is fun, but sometimes it gets you into trouble.
  • It's really hard for you to remember what somebody said to you.
  • Sometimes it's not necessary to really think things through because you can always make things up as you go along.
  • Friends and relatives keep hinting that you're not living up to your potential.
  • You just don't see how setting a budget is supposed to work.

Why Do These Things
Always Happen To Me?

  • Your credit cards are dangerously close to being "maxed out."
  • You think you're a pretty good driver, but your car insurance company keeps raising your rates because of all the points you have on your license.
  • How is it that the bank expects you to keep your check book balanced?
  • You have piles of papers and projects all over the place waiting for you to get back to them.
  • Sometimes you're too busy doing what you're doing to take time to eat. Then, it suddenly catches up with you and you're too starved to take the time to eat the right things. You end up eating too much of the wrong kinds of food.
  • Sometimes your mind races when you should be trying to sleep.
  • There's so much that can go wrong in life that it's a miracle things aren't worse.
  • Things seem to mysteriously move from where you put them.
  • Trying to find things can be very frustrating.
  • You go to the grocery store and when you get back, you find that you forgot half the things you went for in the first place. Hint: Even the faintest ink is more reliable than your memory.

Discover the Mystery Of
The Malicious Meter Maid

  • Parking meters have it in for you.
  • It seems like you're always late to everything, if you even remember what you're supposed to be doing at all. (Hint: PDAs and daytimers were made for you… if you can get used to them running your life.)
  • You like to do lots of different things in a day, or even at once.
  • Things always take much longer than they should and often become impossibly boring.

Is Deadline Dread Killing You?

  • Sometimes the only thing more difficult than meeting a deadline is getting started in the first place because you can't figure out where to start and what you need to get started.
  • When you do try to get things done, there's almost always something trying to distract you, making it really hard to make progress.
  • Deadlines are particularly deadly and keep you from doing a good job because there is never enough time.
  • There's always so much to do that you can't figure out what should come first. In fact, this can become so overwhelming that it can be just too stressful to even think about.

Why Are Other People So Difficult?

  • Meetings are just so boring. Why are there so many of them?
  • You find that you have to be very careful about how you say things so that people don't constantly fly off the handle.
  • People seem to cut you off before you finish what you're saying.
  • You find yourself getting impatient because it takes such a long time for others to "get on board" with you so that things can get done.
  • Sometimes, people can be SO annoying!
  • You don't understand why other people seem to put off fun things and expect you to do the same.
  • You find that people have trouble following you when you change topics.
  • You don't understand how people can just lie in the sun getting a sun tan. You'd rather be doing something more active instead.
  • Your spouse is constantly telling you what to do, as if you can't figure it out for yourself.
  • People just don't appreciate it if you say things directly and to the point. Why does everything always have to be sugar coated?

While not all of these apply to everyone, my point is this: people with ADHD experience their lives differently than most people. This self-diagnostic hints at some of these differences.

Some of the ways people with ADHD experience their lives is that they are filled with unpleasant surprises.

Let me explain…

Danger! Danger! Danger!

The best way I can explain what I'm about to say is through an example.

When a person without ADHD gets in a car and sees that the speedometer goes up to 150 mph, it never occurs to them to go much faster than the traffic around them.

But, when a person with ADHD sees the 150 on the speedometer, they immediately wonder if the car actually goes 150 mph. They're tempted to try it, regardless of the traffic around them.

I'm sure you can think of other examples…

This difference in the way an ADHD brain approaches risk can have tragic consequences.

ADHD brains perceive limitations more as challenges. As a professional, I can tell you that you would not believe how often this attitude will get you into trouble.

I'll get into this more below.

But the Real Devil's in the Details

One thing I've noticed about adults with ADHD is that they're "Big Picture" people. But it's not the big picture dangers that cause the difficulties. It's the day-to-day details that trip them up.

For example:

  • You're great at starting things, but don't finish them. In a sense, this is worse than not starting at all - because you put time and effort into getting part way, only to veer off in an entirely new direction
  • You tend to have trouble organizing things. This makes things hard to find, which aggravates the problem of finishing things.
  • Your tendency to leave things unfinished can be a real career killer.
  • You have trouble with stable long term relationships because people misread your unique perspective. The tragedy is that you're quite loving, compassionate and empathetic - when you're paying attention. But it only takes ONE slip up to totally ruin a relationship. Trust is earned slowly, but destroyed quickly.
  • You tend to have inconsistent reflexes and sometimes inconsistent coordination. When you're "with it," you're really with it - and when you're not - watch out! It only takes a mistake in one tiny detail to produce life changing consequences.

But there's more. As you'll learn in my audio, often, ADHD tends to go along with other conditions that can make life more difficult.

Think of ADHD as the tallest tree in a mostly open meadow. It'll get noticed before the other smaller trees.

Find Out More About ADHD Now>>

Why am I telling you this? It's because I'd like to help you understand why your life has taken some of the strange turns it has.

You see, one common theme with ADHD adults is the number of major life changes and transitions they make. What's interesting is that often my clients don't fully understand why these transitions even happened.

… that's until I explain to them how ADHD colors everything they do. Then the light goes on.

It's sort of like going to the eye doctor after your glasses have gotten too weak. You get a stronger set of glasses, and all of a sudden you realize what you've been missing.

Understanding ADHD gives you the "lens" to understand the parts of your life that have been puzzling you… sometimes for years.

I Want To See Clearly About My ADHD>>

We're All Diamonds…
… And Some of Us Are the
Rare and Valuable Colored Variety

As I mentioned before, adults with ADHD are in a minority. In fact, they make up about 4% of the population. It's a sad but true that people who are different in any way are not treated fairly. It's cruel, but it's a sorry fact of life.

The good news is that it's easier to fix this problem than you might think. At this point you may be wondering if people really do treat you differently.

Let me answer that based on my clinical experience. I have been able to help thousands of patients with ADHD. In so many cases, I have heard stories (if only the walls could speak!) that allow me to answer with an unequivocal "Yes - ADHD people are treated differently - even if someone does not explicitly know you have ADHD."

By the way, I'm not just talking about strangers treating you differently. It's especially true that your family, friends and co-workers know at some level that you are a breed apart. A lot of times they "cover" for you … but sometimes they also get really annoyed with you.

Easy Changes
For an Easier Life

Mind you, in most cases, this difference in the way you're treated is so subtle that it takes an expert to see the pattern. But the patterns are abundantly clear. As I hinted above, the good news is that it's pretty easy to minimize this problem.

The answer is simple. Once you understand HOW these damaging differences get in the way, you will find yourself automatically making changes for the better. You get in touch with how others see you.

ADHD adults are amazingly adaptable once they understand what's at stake. Fact is, you've been adapting all along. It's just always been a hit or miss thing because you didn't quite know what you were doing.

Find Out About These Damaging Differences Now>>

I know this because I've seen how ADHD adults adapt. Sometimes it's almost tragic how hard some try to "overcome" ADHD.

It's a shame, because you don't have to try so hard. It's much easier to live with, even succeed with ADHD, when you realize how to make the best use of it.

What Makes
ADHD Adults So Successful?

You see, most ADHD adults have an amazing inventory of strengths. These strengths can more than make up for ADHD quirks. Of course, you need to do your own journey of self discovery to identify your own strengths, but here are some common ADHD characteristics to start you off:

  • You're creative and intuitive - You're great at thinking outside the box , brainstorming and finding creative solutions. You're an independent thinker and love to improvise.
  • You're artistic and sensitive - You can perceive things in new and exciting ways and present this in such a way that people get a peek into your mind.
  • You're enthusiastic and spontaneous - You're a free spirit with a quick mind. This makes you interesting to talk to. Your enthusiasm is catching.
  • You're quick witted and quick minded - You can think on your feet and can soak up interesting new information. You are adaptable and great in a crisis.
  • You're a natural born multi-tasker - In fact, you NEED to be doing more than one thing at a time in order to stay interested.
  • You're energetic and inventive- You've got intense focus on anything you're determined to finish. This can lead to significant accomplishments, discoveries and creative breakthroughs.
  • You're an original and a visionary - You're so far ahead of the curve that it takes quite awhile for everyone else to catch up.

How to Succeed
Beyond Your Wildest Dreams

Once ADHD adults get off the couch and get some traction in life, they can excel beyond anybody's wildest imagination.

In other words, you need to make sure you know what it takes to get some traction - and in case you haven't experienced what you yourself are capable of yet - watch out - because there's no holding you back!

“Just Straight Forward Answers... and It Was Excellent”

“ ... I listened to Dr. Barkley and it was excellent. As a psychiatrist, I know that different people learn differently. Some learn by listening and others learn by reading. That's why I've gone over the top and included BOTH an mp3 audio as well as the full, edited, transcripts. I've even included the page numbers and the time stamps above so it's easier to find a given section. (And you can keep the list above as a key.) You can also search for a word or phrase so you can find a specific section.

In Case You're Wondering…

There's one question I need to address briefly right now... I also talk about it in my report and on the recording.

"How is it that I've made it this far having ADHD without being diagnosed?"

Not everyone needs to ask this question, so feel free to skip to the next section.

Many older adults with ADHD have never been diagnosed because doctors have only been realizing adults could have ADHD in recent years.

Also, families often accommodated ADHD family members. In other words, they covered for them because they knew they were different in some way.

Finally, some Adults with ADHD are very bright and intelligent. This can also cover up ADHD symptoms. Intelligence is a double edged sword. For example, people excused Albert Einstein's quirks (it's likely he had ADHD,) by saying he was "just being an absent minded professor."

In any case, if you suspect you have ADHD, my report will show you your next step in finding out how severe it might be and what to do about it.
